If an employee begins taking Singapore Ministry of Manpower (MOM) statutory leave late in the year β for example in November or December β you may wonder whether any remaining balance automatically carries over into the new calendar year, or whether you need to transfer it manually. The answer depends on the specific leave type. This article explains the behaviour for Paternity Leave, Shared Parental Leave, Extended Maternity Leave, and standard Maternity Leave.
At a Glance
| Leave Type | Remaining Balance Carries Over Automatically? | Admin Action Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Paternity Leave | Yes | No |
| Shared Parental Leave | Yes | No |
| Extended Maternity Leave | Yes | No |
| Maternity Leave (standard 16-week) | No | Yes β manual transfer needed |
Paternity, Shared Parental, and Extended Maternity Leave
These three leave types are tied to the child's first 12 months of life (from birth date up to the day before the child's first birthday), not to the calendar year. Because of this, the remaining balance is always calculated as the statutory entitlement minus the days already taken within that 12-month window β regardless of whether the year changes in between.
When an application spans the year boundary (for example, starting in December and continuing into January), JustLogin automatically splits it into two records and deducts each portion from the correct year. No manual intervention is needed β the remaining balance is simply available in the new year.
Important Note For this automatic carry-over to work correctly, the employee's child details β including the child's date of birth β must be recorded in the system. If no child record is present, JustLogin falls back to a standard calendar-year calculation and the carry-over will not occur. If you are unsure, verify that the child's birth date has been entered before the employee takes leave. |
Standard Maternity Leave (16-Week)
Standard Maternity Leave behaves differently. It is calculated on a calendar-year basis, which means that on 1 January the system resets to a fresh full entitlement. Any remaining balance from the previous year is not carried over automatically.
If an employee started Maternity Leave late in the year and still has a remaining balance, an admin must transfer it manually. To do this:
- Go to Leave > Administration > Balance Transfer.
- Use the Manual Balance Transfer panel on the right-hand side of the page.
Note: The panel on the left is for automatic transfers and applies to Annual Leave only β it cannot be used here. - Enter the remaining balance to be transferred to the new year and confirm.
Alternatively, you can use a Leave Adjustment to add the remaining days to the employee's balance in the new year.
Checking Your Organisation's Leave Setup
The behaviour described above applies to organisations using the standard JustLogin built-in Singapore statutory leave types on a calendar-year basis. Results may differ if any of the following apply to your organisation:
- Anniversary-based leave year: If your company's leave year is anniversary-based rather than calendar-year-based, the calculation logic may differ.
- Custom leave types: If your organisation uses a custom Maternity Leave type instead of the built-in one, the carry-over behaviour may not match what is described here.
If you are unsure which setup applies to your organisation, please contact JustLogin Support for clarification.
